Ultrasonic Pest Control Information

If faced with pest rodents, birds, or insects, you doubtlessly want to get them out of your home and yard as quickly (and inexpensively) as possible. You may have heard of ultrasonic pest control as a relatively cheap way of combating insect, bird, and rodent problems, and there are all sorts of gadgets on the market.

How Does Ultrasonic Pest Control Work?

The premise is that they emit ultra-high frequency sound waves, which irritate birds, bats, rodents, and arthropod pests such as cockroaches, fleas, silverfish, and spiders, thus driving the pests away from your premises.

These ultrasonic pest control devices are usually designed to plug into an electrical outlet, though if you're bothered more when you are hiking, camping, barbecuing, etc., you can also find battery-controlled models that can be carried about on your person.

Prices for these gadgets run from quite cheap to surprisingly expensive (as low as $7 and up to $700 or more). But what about the bottom line? Are they effective and worth the money?

Does Ultrasonic Pest Control Work?

Do these devices actually keep rodents, birds, insects, etc. away from your home and person?

The ultimate answer is... not really.

According to an article from the UNL Extension, "The consensus of researchers who have actually investigated ultrasonic devices is these products do not effectively repel or eliminate pests from homes. In fact, in the 1980's the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) charged several companies with false advertising and required them to make refunds to customers. My guess is it is just a matter of time and the FTC will go after the makers of these other devices also."

Fortunately, there are other (also non-toxic) pest control methods that do work.
