Pesticides and Water Quality

All pesticides are toxic, yet many of us use them without considering alternative pest control methods.  It's true that there are cases where natural methods may be ineffective, but pesticides should be a last resort.  They are of particular concern when they enter the water supply.  Pesticides are widely used in both urban areas and farmlands where the chemicals can get into the underground water systems, streams, and wells. Once there, they can potentially travel great distances and affect a lot of water.

It is estimated that 2 lbs. of insecticides are used per year per household. This means water quality is a concern not just in rural areas but in urban ones as well. Why should you care?  You may be drinking the stuff in one way or another.  Some pesticides are known to cause birth defects or cancer.  They are also dangerous to our environment.
