Bug Busters, by Bernice Lifton, is a pest control book that deals mainly with natural methods as opposed to pesticides. It is $14.95 and is available in paperback, about 250 pages. It is divided into the following sections: Part 1: No Pests, No Poisons This section has two chapters that serve as an introduction to analyzing your pest problems and ways to control infestations, possibly using natural means rather than chemicals. Part 2: Pests of Food This section contains for chapters: Outsmarting the Cagey Cockroach, Critters in the Crackers -- Pests in the Pantry, Rats and Mice: There's No Pied Piper, and the Fearsome Fly. Though the title names are somewhat corny, there's some decent information on pests that are attracted by human food and how to proof your house against them. Part 3: Pests of the Body This section has three chapters discussing mosquitoes, fleas, ticks, lice, and bedbugs. It gives you both information on the insects themselves, including where they breed and live, and information on how detect and get rid of them. Part 4: Pests of Property Chapters in this section include: Clothes Moths, Carpet Beetles, Silverfish, Firebrats, and Crickets, Termites and Carpenter Ants: the Hidden Vandals, and Garden Pests -- Part of the Landscape. Again, these chapters discuss the various insects and their habitats, followed by methods for controlling infestations. Part 5: Controlling the Controllers This last section covers ants, spiders, and wasps. Though these are often considered beneficial insects, it's possible to have too much of a good thing. This section also touches on pesticides, in the event that other more natural methods fail you. All in all, Bug Busters is a solid resource despite being several years old. The nice thing about it is it acknowledges some of the dangers of using chemicals in pest control and informs you about natural alternatives that in many cases turn out to be more economical.
